Partita in B Flat, by J.S. Bach. arr. JG Miller

with Juliann Welch, horn

Selections. Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2011, Lyman, New Hampshire

Taking Bach's pieces and applying a different vision, his Partita, originally written for keyboard, has seen several arrangements with horn, most notably Vince DeRosa's recording with guitar and James Thatcher's recording with horn and piano. This arrangement gives the horns all the note responsibility of a keyboard instrument - something which would have never been possible in Bach's time.

Five Fantasy Pieces, by A. Klughardt. arr. JG Miller

with Allen Fogle, Horn and Arlene Kies, Piano.

Selections. Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2011, Lyman, NH

This is a new arrangement for two horns (or horn and oboe) with piano. These romantic pieces are a fantastic example of the little-known Klughardt and his ability as a composer.

Steamboat Stomp, by Robert Weirich. Arlene Kies, Piano.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2008, Lyman, NH

A great show piece written by pianist Robert Weirich with some jazz influence, a little bit of sarcasm, and a flurry of fingers!

Aer Tranquillo from Il Re Pastore, by W.A. Mozart, arr. JG Miller. Arlene Kies, Piano.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH

This fun little aria is lifted from one of Mozart's early operas. The popping sound isn't your speakers - it's a blazing fireplace to keep our participants warm in the unpredictable New Hampshire summer weather!

Nocturne for Horn and Harp, by C. Oberthur, ed. JG Miller. (Selection) Vanessa Young, Harp

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH

A common combination of instruments over 150 years ago, today there are not many surviving works of horn and harp pieces. This particular piece - a hand copied manuscript - was found in a desk drawer in a basement. The wonderfully talented Vanessa Young brought it with her for us to perform. This selection features a muted horn just echoing the melody from the previous verse, with the harp predominating in sound.

Scherzo from Cello Sonata op. 65, by F. Chopin, arr. JG Miller. (Selection) Arlene Kies, Piano.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH

Arlene Kies, the resident pianist at KBHC mentioned this piece to me and was convinced it would be a great piece for horn. After hearing her play the accompaniment, I agreed - this is a great work, and collaborated with her to arrange, edit, learn, and perform it in three days!

Cloak and Dagger Games, by JG Miller. (Selection) Arlene Kies, Piano.

Premiere Performance, Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH.

A dark and sinister work, this show piece was written in 2010 and has influences from Shostakovich, Bartok, and other Hungarian composers and folk tunes. This selection encompasses the Dagger Game, an off-kilter visceral dance, employing some extended techniques of the horn including flutter tongue, pitch bending, with an abrupt finish.

Mass in B Minor, Quoniam by JS Bach. (Selection) Christopheren Nomura, Bass-Baritone. Helmuth Rilling, Conductor.

Recorded Live, Friday, November 13th, 2009, Los Angeles, CA.

This huge work by Bach features an obligato horn part in one singular movement entitled "Quoniam tu solus sanctus." The part was written for a "corno da caccia" or "hunting horn" - during Bach's time, there were no valves for horns!

Fugue in C Minor, by JS Bach, arr. Lowell Shaw. Faculty Quartet.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH.

Bach was undoubtedly the master the fugue, and playing with this faculty quartet was one of the most enjoyable musical experiences I have had in a while. Not to mention - playing low parts is always a blast on a Bach work!

Ruhevoll from Symphony no. 4, by G. Mahler, arr. JG Miller. Faculty Ensemble.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH.

Ruhevoll is the German word for "calm" or "reposeful" and this beautiful chorale from Gustav Mahler's 4th Symphony was a joy to arrange for 8 horns, and even more so to perform it with the wonderful colleagues of KBHC.

Passacaglia in C Minor, by JS Bach, arr. JG Miller. Faculty Ensemble.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2010, Lyman, NH

There is nothing better than the flawless writings of Bach to share with great friends and musicians. This piece was written for organ, and the repeated bass line carries throughout the piece as the complexity grows layer upon layer.

Festive Overture by D. Shostakovich, arr JG Miller. Faculty Ensemble.

Recorded Live at Kendall Betts Horn Camp 2009, Lyman, NH

Sometimes horn players just need to cut loose. Often we horn players are relegated to backup lines rather than the melody, but in this arrangement of Shostakovich's Festive Overture, a great challenge and reward exists for horn players: Some of these lines were originally played by the much more agile winds and strings!
